Choose the main switch setting

When installing hardware in a machine, the main switch setting must match how the device is wired. This affects battery status, disconnect alerts, and battery consumption.

When should I use this guide?

Use this guide when installing hardware in a machine and you need to specify whether the device is wired before or after the battery main switch.

The guide is also relevant if you want to understand why battery status or disconnect alerts work differently depending on how the device is wired.

Requirements

You need to know how the hardware is physically installed in the machine.

If you are unsure whether the device is wired before or after the battery main switch, check this with the person who installed the equipment.

What is the difference?

The setting affects what data Machines can show and which alerts can be sent.

Device wired before battery main switch

When the device is wired before the battery main switch, it remains powered even when the machine is turned off.

This means that Machines can:

  • show the correct status of the machine battery

  • send battery status alerts

  • send alerts if the hardware is disconnected

The battery may drain faster if the machine is not used for a longer period.

Device wired after battery main switch

When the device is wired after the battery main switch, power to the device is cut when the main switch is turned off.

This means that Machines cannot send battery status alerts or alerts if the device is disconnected while the power is cut.

This reduces the risk of battery drain when the machine is idle.

How to do it

  1. Select the correct option in the installation guide in the app when the hardware is installed.

  2. Check that the selected option matches how the hardware is physically installed in the machine.

  3. If the setting needs to be changed later, you can change it on the machine detail page.

If it does not work

First check that:

  • the setting in Machines matches how the hardware is installed

  • the hardware has power according to the selected connection type

  • the person who installed the equipment has confirmed whether the device is wired before or after the battery main switch

Tips!

  • Do not choose an option based on which alerts you want to receive. The setting should reflect the actual connection.

  • If battery status or disconnect alerts are missing, it may be because the device is wired after the battery main switch.

  • If the machine is unused for a long time, wiring before the battery main switch can affect the battery.
